In the late 19th century the Canadian Government undertook a formal partnership with church entities to run industrial, boarding and residential schools for Aboriginal people.
The Indian Residential School system was designed to impose foreign languages, foreign religions, as well as, the values and work skills of Canadian society on Aboriginal children.
More than 130 industrial, boarding and residential schools operated between 1831 and 1996.
